Recently, our Head of Legal, Katie Ashby-Koppens, had the pleasure of sitting down with Efrat Fenigson on her podcast You’re The Voice.
Efrat is an Israeli independent journalist, podcaster, and former high-tech CMO who made the deliberate shift into independent media. Her work now focuses on personal freedom, sovereignty, and the role of technologies like Bitcoin in shaping the future. She brings a thoughtful, globally aware lens to conversations that many legacy platforms simply won’t have.
This was a wide-ranging and thoughtful discussion, grounded in both legal analysis and lived experience over the past few years.
What Katie and Efrat covered
In this episode, Katie joined Efrat to explore what many are now recognising as the “legal frontline” of recent global shifts.
They covered:
- The role of law during COVID-era decision making, and how quickly long-standing legal principles were tested
- The use of emergency powers, and what happens when those powers are extended or normalised
- The growing intersection between public health policy and digital infrastructure
- Digital ID frameworks and the broader question of control, access, and participation in society
- Why sovereignty, both personal and national, has become a central issue moving forward
- The People’s Position and the recent engagement VFF had with the Royal Commission Phase 2 – downloadable copy available.
- Katie also shared insights from her work on what has become known as the People’s Report, including the importance of examining decisions based on what was known at the time, not through the lens of hindsight. The first chapter of the People’s Report on Vaccine Passes has just been published.
A Conversation Worth Listening To
One of the strengths of this discussion is that it doesn’t rely on slogans or hindsight critiques. Instead, it carefully walks through the legal structures, the decisions that were made, and the implications those decisions continue to have.
Efrat’s interviewing style allows space for nuance, and Katie brings a disciplined legal perspective that helps anchor the conversation.
If you’re interested in how law, policy, and technology are increasingly intersecting, this is well worth your time, watch the full podcast.
