Reject The Reckless Gene Technology Bill

If you allow this ‘deregulation' bill to exist, it will enable widespread genetic modification of New Zealand's food, soil, medicine, and therapeutics, exposing everyone to unmeasured, potentially catastrophic harm.

This is a high-stakes experiment where politicians intentionally remove safeguards so corporates can manipulate nature for profit—and you become a human guinea pig.

Your silence will be seen as consent. Speak up before it's too late >>

What Is The Gene Technology Bill 2024?

Gene technology laws are meant to act as a safety net, ensuring that genetic technologies are applied responsibly to protect our health and environment.
New Zealand already has some of these protections in place, though many experts argue they are far from sufficient.
The Gene Technology Bill 2024 (the Bill), misleadingly labeled as a “reform”, purports to enhance existing regulations. In truth, it does precisely the opposite.
Do not be deceived—this Bill represents a thinly veiled dismantling of protections, not an improvement.

What’s In The Fine Print?

Delving deeper, the Bill eliminates crucial safeguards and transparency measures, depriving you of the right to know what’s in your food and exposing you to unmeasured, potentially catastrophic risks.
It paves the way for irreversible environmental harm, uncontrolled genetic contamination, and a new food system dominated by biotech corporations.
Moreover, it absolves companies of liability for their mistakes, leaving citizens like you to deal with the consequences when things inevitably go wrong.

Lessons NOT Learned!

The Covid years revealed the severe impacts of hastily advancing biotechnology, yet this Bill blatantly disregards these warnings to push deregulation for profit.
It proposes reducing labelling requirements for genetically modified foods, thus hiding their true contents, weakening risk assessment protocols which could result in unsafe biotechnological practices, and transferring control to a poorly supervised government-appointed regulator, fostering corruption.
The Bill centralises power in a single regulator, undermining local decision-making and raising concerns over the lack of independence and resources to handle complex applications.
The risks of contamination, unintended genetic effects, and irreversible harmful modifications are not just possible—they are inevitable.

Burning Billions for Political Agenda

Politicians are once again stripping away safeguards, chasing a fantasy of economic benefits and improvements in so-called “climate change” and healthcare.
Judith Collins claims the Bill will unlock “profitable” new trade deals but overlooks the significant damage it does to New Zealand's “clean-green” reputation.
The supposed benefits are entirely hypothetical and unrealistic, whereas the drawbacks are quantifiable and tangible, with projected annual losses to New Zealand’s agricultural exports ranging between $10 billion and $20 billion.
It also overlooks the massive market share we could capture by remaining one of the few premium GMO-free exporters while the big boys sell out.

A Reckless Gamble With Our Future

This Bill represents a reckless gamble with New Zealand’s future, putting a daydream of profits ahead of public safety, environmental health, and ethical standards.
By deregulating critical genetic technologies without robust oversight, the Bill risks turning New Zealand into a testing ground for unproven biotech technologies, exposing the nation to unknown long-term consequences.
The centralisation of decision-making into a single, government-appointed, and inadequately resourced regulator compounds the risks.

What Can You Do?

You must demand accountability, transparency, and the protection of our rights to safe, natural choices.
Oppose the Gene Technology Bill before it's too late. There’s no going back once it’s done.

What Is The Gene Technology Reform Bill?

Gene technology laws are intended as a safety measure to ensure that genetic technologies are applied responsibly in the real world, safeguarding our health and environment. New Zealand already has these protections in place.
However, the coalition government (cunningly employing the word “reform” to suggest improvement) Intends to weaken New Zealand's existing safeguards in pursuit of short-term economic growth and delusional visions of climate change and health care improvements.
They claim it’ll be all upside, and no downside, and that all Kiwis will benefit from any new advancements.
But when has removing safeguards ever made things safer or better, especially when messing with nature?
NEVER!
They claim that all new innovations to come will be proven safe and effective before approval. But what rational person would believe that when they’re reducing the very regulations that produce that outcome.
Still, the government has the nerve to insist there's nothing to worry about. Any concerns you may have are merely unfounded conspiracies.

Wait A Minute—We’ve Heard That Before…!

Only a few years ago the government removed important legislative safeguards from the bill of rights to allow brand-new, untested, unproven, unregulated gene therapy in the form of a covid vaccine, to be forced upon all Kiwis.
It was the same pretence, supposedly all for your benefit, all upside, no downside. And of course complete with the same unsubstantiated claim of “safe” and “effective”.
Don’t be deceived, the danger with the newly proposed gene technology legislation bares all the hallmarks of the vaccine playbook; important protections are being discarded, genes are being modified (supposedly for your benefit), and someone stands to profit disproportionately at the expense of citizens.
The only difference this time is that the battle-ground has shifted from the doctor's office to the supermarket.

Why Is It So Dangerous?

If the regulations that have carefully governed the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in New Zealand are relaxed, it will open the floodgates to a barrage of potentially irreversible consequences, putting all Kiwis at risk.
Firstly, new GMO plants will become so pervasive and invasive in the food chain they're certain to contaminate wild, heirloom and organic species, leading to unknown mutations and irreversible biodiversity loss.
Cross-contamination with organic produce is also likely, making it impossible to know whether the organic products you buy are genuinely organic.
Secondly, with the drive for rapid commercialisation, crucial long-term environmental impact studies will be minimised or omitted.
Under the new rules, companies motivated by profit will prioritise short-term gains over sustainable practices.
And once the cat is out of the bag, there's no going back; the damage will be irreparable.

But It Gets Worse..

Because GMOs are patentable, the proposed legislation could quickly limit food choices by allowing a few dominant companies to monopolise the market, dictating consumer options.
In this gene tech gold rush there will be little recourse for any harm these so-called “innovations” may cause to individuals and the environment.
This leaves the public and environment extremely vulnerable to the consequences of unchecked genetic experimentation.

Everyone Will Be Affected By It.

If these law changes go through in their current form, it won’t matter whether you’re an environmentalist or someone indifferent to GMOs; we’ll all be in the same boat.
Our health, environment, and our ecosystems will be at the mercy of government incentivised gene tech firms.
You won’t have a choice not to consume Frankenstein food anymore.
Before long it’ll be the only option.
That’s why we must rally against these changes now, collectively, before they gain further ground. Whether you value natural food, conservation, or simply the principle of cautious scientific progress, this will affect you.
The best hope is to get informed and oppose these changes now before it’s too late.
