Local Heroes Fight Back: Westport's Battle Against Forced Relocation
Spokespersons Desna Bruce, Adriana de Ruiter-James and Paul Reynolds joined Paul to discuss a draft master plan to relocate Westport that has been proposed to the Buller District Council. Their action group of locals are fighting back against the proposed Managed Retreat. The trio challenged officials' claims about flooding risks, arguing that recent disasters were man-made rather than natural.
Paul Reynolds, has a NZ Certificate in Engineering (Civil) and was a Registered Engineering Associate until retiring. He worked for the Ministry of Works then for Buller County Council as Assistant Engineer and later as Acting Engineer and has family ties to Westport Borough Council Empowering Act in 1873 and the lived area. Desna Bruce and Adriana de Ruiter-James are concerned residents who cound potentially lose their homes.
