Former UK detective, zoo expert and live export ship inspector, Charles Cadwallader, spoke to Paul to share what he has seen, in light of the government overturning the ban on live exports.
Drawing from his experience inspecting cargo ships, he revealed how converted vehicle carriers with slippery floors and intense equatorial heat create dangerous conditions for livestock, noting that proper animal welfare and profit rarely coexist in this controversial practice.
Charles’ background includes: 20 years as a UK police officer (detective), 16 years working in various zoos (latterly, Curator of Auckland Zoo in ’07-’08), National Chief Inspector of the RNZSPCA, several years as Animal Welfare Investigations Manager in what was then NZ MAF (now rebranded as MPI) and, latterly, three years in an identical role in Western Australia.
