ASTON GARRATT: Psychology Researcher: On Using Social Media To Help The Mental Health Of Our Nation
In this interview, Nat chats with psychology researcher Aston Garratt who is completing her second master's degree in psychology and aims to spend her next five years researching New Zealanders’ mental health-seeking behaviour on social media.
Aston is currently conducting pilot research for a larger five-year doctoral study in which she hopes to run a nationwide mental health campaign using social media posts, shorts and reels to investigate whether it can make a positive impact on the mental health of the nation.
In this age of technology, where we all now possess mobile handheld devices giving us 24/7 access to the internet and social media, there is a huge potential to utilise this technology for good. Social media offers a very affordable and accessible means to quickly and easily disseminate psychoeducation to the nation, potentially decreasing the stigma of mental health, while increasing mental health literacy and the ability to know when and how to seek help.
