Programming & Production (Advertising, Arts & Media)

15 hours + per week

The Opportunity:

Want to work with a team making a real difference in New Zealand?  At Reality Check Radio, we cover the issues the mainstream media won't and challenge the voices they don’t. We believe in providing the full story so our audience can discern fact from fiction.

We are seeking a political strategist to manage political content across the station. As a political strategist, you will be responsible for ensuring that every week, politicians from across the political spectrum, from both local and central government, appear on RCR.

The role requires flexibility, taking direction from senior producers and editors and adapting to the needs and quirks of individual hosts. Importantly, the political producer will display a commitment to telling both sides of the story.

In all cases, RCR aims to expand the breadth and quality of public discourse and cross-partisan divides and encourage greater understanding and acceptance of different perspectives. Above all, RCR is committed to the truth.

This is an initial 6-month contract with the potential to extend to a longer contract.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage political content for RCR’s programming, ensuring a balanced representation of political voices.
  • Schedule appearances of MPs, Ministers, Councillors, commissioners, watchdogs, and interest groups on various shows.
  • Stay up to date on major international and national political news, focusing on its impact on New Zealand. Develop a good grasp of local body politics.
  • Work out fresh story angles and brief hosts on the background of various stories.
  • Build and maintain a contact book of press secretaries, politicians, and other relevant figures.
  • Collaborate with hosts, senior producers, and editors, adapting to their needs and directions.
  • Ensure the commitment to telling both sides of the story and promoting diverse perspectives.
  • Contribute to expanding the breadth and quality of public discourse, encouraging understanding and acceptance of different viewpoints.

About You:

  • A strong interest in and understanding of international and New Zealand politics, including local body politics.
  • Excellent communication and networking skills, with the ability to build and maintain professional relationships.
  • Ability to research and develop fresh story angles, providing insightful background information to hosts.
  • Flexibility to take direction from senior producers and editors and adapt to the needs of individual hosts.
  • A dedication to balanced reporting and promoting diverse perspectives.
  • Open-mindedness and a commitment to free speech and democracy.

The Ideal Candidate Will Preferably Have:

  • Experience in journalism, radio production, newsrooms or a related field.
  • Experience in booking guests for radio shows or similar media platforms.
  • Knowledge of diverse perspectives and voices within New Zealand society.
  • Previous experience working in a fast-paced media environment.

Benefits:

  • Enjoy the flexibility of working remotely.
  • Play a key role in shaping public discourse and fostering understanding across political divides.
  • Opportunities to develop a wide-ranging network of political contacts and deepen your understanding of political issues.
  • Be part of a movement making a significant impact on New Zealand’s media landscape.
